Smash Procrastination with Kaizen
Many of you know that I’ve been sober for 20 years… and for many years I struggled to make great progress in my life.
MOST of the time, it was because I was trying to move HUGE mountains… all at once.
Can anybody relate?
Today, I want to talk about a lesser-known gem from the world of productivity – a Japanese technique that’s been quietly helping individuals overcome procrastination for decades.
I am talking about Kaizen, which is the art of continuous improvement and has been a central focus of my coaching methods for the last 20 years.
It has also been integral in helping me build my own success in life.
Kaizen has been around since WWII and translates to “Good Change”
Derived from the Japanese words “kai” (change) and “zen” (good), Kaizen is centered around the philosophy of continuous improvement.
While traditionally associated with business practices, Kaizen is equally potent in combating procrastination in personal and professional realms.
Key Principles of Kaizen to Eliminate Procrastination:
- Start Small:Break tasks into tiny, manageable steps.Focus on incremental progress rather than overwhelming end goals.
- Consistency Over Intensity:Commit to consistent, small efforts.Regularity builds momentum and helps form lasting habits.
- Embrace the 1-Minute Rule:If a task takes less than a minute, do it immediately.Prevents small tasks from piling up and becoming overwhelming.
- Reflect and Adjust:Regularly evaluate your progress.Adjust your approach based on what works and what doesn’t.
- Continuous Learning:Cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and improvement.Each task, successful or not, is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Work in small bite sized chunks to achieve BIG progress
Practical Tips for Applying Kaizen:
- Kaizen Journaling: Maintain a journal to track your daily progress and reflect on improvements.
- Visualize Success: Create a visual representation of your goals and progress to stay motivated.
- Kaizen Circles: Form a small group to support each other in implementing Kaizen principles.
The Beauty of Kaizen:
- Sustainable Progress: Kaizen focuses on sustainable, long-term improvements.
- Reduces Overwhelm: Breaking tasks into smaller steps makes them more manageable.

Take a Kaizen-inspired approach to just one to three tasks per day.
Each day write down just 3 things to get done that day to get you closer to your goal. After 7 days, you’ll have 21 things done.
